Dance and health

Dancing has similar effects, especially  choreographed to music. Our brain has to focus on doing the right moves, follow the music, keep our position and deliver expression!

DanceHealth was the topic of Dancing my mind, a seminar arranged in collaboration by Karolinska Institutet, GIH and Balettakademin recently. Combining the field of neuroscience with the field of dance shows promising results. There's evidence that dance is one of the best activities for keeping our brains healthy and reducing risks of developing dementia.

A good example of how dance can help is Balettakademin’s program Danshälsa for patients diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Dancing to music can help the patients into a state of flow, overcome struggles to move and give them a moment of freedom from their disease!

According to a study published in the British Medical Journal in 2024, dancing also reduces depression symptoms more than walking, yoga, strength training and standard anti-depressants! What if we can use this knowledge in a bigger scale?
